WAC Awards Nominees Announced

The Winnipeg Arts Council is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2009 Winnipeg Arts Council Awards.  30 artists, arts administrators and patrons were recognized by their peers and nominated across the four award categories.
 
The winners will be announced at 2009 Mayor’s Luncheon for the Arts on Thursday, June 11.

ARTS CHAMPION Award

The Arts Champion Award honours an individual or business patron that has demonstrated sustained support to the arts in Winnipeg. The nominees are:

José Koes, nominated by The Winnipeg Art Gallery.
William H. & Ms. Shirley E. Loewen, nominated jointly by The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, The Manitoba Opera, and the Manitoba Theatre Centre.
RBC Financial Group, nominated by The National Screen Institute - Canada.
Winnipeg Free Press, nominated by The Winnipeg Folk Festival.

ON THE RISE Award

The On the Rise award recognizes the demonstrated promise of an emerging professional artist (in any discipline). The nominees are:

Michael Dudeck, nominated by PLATFORM: centre for photographic + digital arts.
Sheena Grobb, nominated by The Winnipeg Folk Festival.

MAKING A MARK Award

The Making a Mark award applauds an established professional artist (in any discipline), who is receiving critical recognition for excellence in art practice in Winnipeg and beyond. The nominees are:

Columpa Bobb, nominated by Vanessa Rigaux.
Ardith Boxall, nominated by Shakespeare in the Ruins.
Paul Butler, nominated by Border Crossings Magazine.

Brent Lott, nominated by Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers Board of Directors.

The Making a Difference award celebrates the contribution of an artist or arts administrator to the growth and development of the arts in Winnipeg. The nominees are:
